March Madness is here! Your brackets are all filled out and you are ready to binge watch hours of basketball from now until early April. March Madness is one of the most popular events in American Sports today, and it seems to get better every year. Here are the reasons why the NCAA tournament is the single greatest event in American Sports.
- It’s practically nonstop.
We don’t have to wait very long to see the next game. The first round happens quickly and in a matter of two days, then the round of 32 starts soon after. It’s 63 basketball games in a matter of three weeks, so something is almost always happening, and we don’t have to wait long to see what we want to see.
- You don’t have to be knowledgeable about NCAA basketball to enjoy it.
The bracket challenge makes it so that anyone and everyone can have fun with the tournament. Men and women of all ages can grab a bracket and fill it out, just to see how well they do. And there is nothing like the excitement of predicting an upset when you literally have no idea what you are doing. This also makes it so that many people want to watch the games because they want to see how well their bracket does.
- It’s possibly the most competitive sporting event in America.
There are always upsets. Every year at least one team seeded 12-15 seems to find a way to win a game. The first round definitely experiences a few blowouts, but once you get to the sweet 16, every game is competitive and nail-biting. This is likely because a lot of the higher seeds facing each other have never played against the lower seed that they are against, so they don’t exactly know what to expect.
- Teams don’t have to win the national championship to leave the tournament happy.
In any playoff setting in sports today, when teams lose, they are heartbroken. And sure, the NCAA basketball teams experience this as well. But when a low-seeded team manages to win a game in the tournament, it is an unforgettable victory for the rest of the players’ lives. It is hard to imagine that a 14 seeded team actually expects to win the National Championship. When they lose they are sad, just like everyone else, but they can remember that they were able to win a game that they were never supposed to win and they can cherish forever. That is a huge victory in and of itself.
- It’s not about money-at least not for the players.
These players play their hearts out, and unlike professional sports, there aren’t doing it to earn a paycheck. They are working hard to meet a common goal, and other than a handful of the players who will earn a ticket to the NBA draft, none of them are truly gaining anything individually. It’s all about getting to cut the net down as a team.
- It is simply impossible to predict what is going to happen.
The college basketball “experts” all over the sports networks analyze the teams and do their best to predict what is going to happen based on pages and pages of statistics. Yet after it is all said and done, these “experts” brackets are as accurate as the average Joe’s. This is because come tournament time, anything can happen!
