Here we are again. Free Agency unofficially begins today March 7, 2017 with the “legal tampering” period beginning. We will see some big names drop off of the free agency board today although the signings cannot become official until the new league year begins on March 9 at 4:00pm eastern time. The Washington Redskins who have been big players in free agency in the past have taken a more conservative approach since Scot McCloughan has taken over the GM role for the Redskins. I know that his status with the team seems to be up in the air at the moment but my opinion is that they look to stay on the conservative track again this year. It would not surprise me however if they did try to make a run at some play-makers to help put them over the top. Listed below are a few players that have the potential to help the Redskins take another step forward.
Calais Campbell DE: There is not another player like Campbell available in free agency. At 6-foot-8, 300 pounds he is physically overwhelming for many offensive lineman. He is still only 30 years old and can add much needed depth to the Redskins D-Line rotation that has been horrible at stopping the run over the last few seasons.
Tony Jefferson S: There is no question that the Redskins need to get better on the back-end of the defense. Their bend but don’t break style of play cost them a few games last season. Yet another Arizona Cardinal on the list Tony Jefferson would bring a much needed swagger along with playmaking ability to a defense that needs all the help it can get.
Zach Brown ILB: I am not sure the Redskins look to sign a LB in Free Agency but it shouldn’t be out of the question. There are some fan favorites at the ILB positions for the Redskins. Will Compton is becoming a solid player before our eyes as well as Mason Foster. If the Redskins were to add a player like Brown however I think that they would be in a better position entering into the season. If they don’t sign Brown there aren’t any other LB’s that they should pursue. Bolstering the defensive line may help the LB’s the Redskins currently have be able to play more aggressively than they have in the past.
Nick Mangold C: Nick Mangold is coming off of a season where he injured his ankle. At 33 years old however he still has a few good years left in him. If they can sign him to a reasonable 3-year deal I think they should make a push to sign him. Kory Lichtensteiger has officially submitted his retirement paperwork to the league office so there is a need for another Center on the roster. Spencer Long stepped up admirably last season while Lichtensteiger was out with injuries but if there is a chance to bring in a player with leadership abilities like Mangold I think you have to make him a part of your team if at all possible.
